On 04 march 2021 in an online event, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Housing and Urban Affairs, announced the rankings of the Ease of Living Index (EoLI) 2020 and Municipal Performance Index (MPI) 2020. 111 cities participated in the assessment exercise that was conducted in 2020.
The analysis categorises them into Million+ populated cities & and Less than Million populated cites along with all the cities under the Smart Cities Program.
Bengaluru Secured Top Position in the Million+ category, While Shimla secured the first position in less than a Million category.
The Ease of Living Index (EoLI) is a tool for assessing the quality of life and the impact of various urban development initiatives. It gives a comprehensive picture of participating cities across India, based on their quality of life, economic stability and long-term sustainability and resilience. Through a Citizen Perception Survey, the assessment also incorporates residents’ opinions on the services provided by the city administration.
Coimbatore was ranked 7th in the Ease of living category with an overall score of 59.72. While the state’s capital Chennai secured 4th place with an overall score of 62.61.
Coimbatore(60.33) was positioned in second place after Chennai(60.84) in the Quality of Life index.
Coimbatore(32.48) was placed behind Chennai(34.16) in the Economic Stability index.
The Coimbatore city scored 80.30 and was positioned 10th place in Citizens opinion on the services provided by the administration. Chennai secured 3rd place with a score of 82.60.
Coimbatore was pushed to the 47th position with a score of 48.25 under the sustainability index. No other Tamil Nadu city has made the Top 10.
